Why Stillness is My Most Important Art Supply

Like many women in mid-life, I often find myself standing at the center of a whirlwind.

Between my full-time job, supporting my daughter through her unique learning journey, navigating the needs of aging parents, and being a present partner, the "to-do" list can feel less like a guide and more like a weight. There are moments when the sheer volume of boxes to check feels overwhelming, sometimes I even feel panicky.

In those seasons, even my sanctuary, making art, can start to feel like "work." I find myself obsessing over marketing emails, social media videos, and the logistics of a new collection.

But I’ve learned that you cannot pour from an empty cup, and you certainly cannot create depth from a shallow breath.

Stillness Before Action

Lately, I’ve been approaching my life and my art through a new lens: Stillness, then action.

Before I pick up a tool or open my laptop, I (attempt!) to simply be. I watch my thoughts without getting stuck on them. I acknowledge the pockets of unease in my body. I practice kind of internal self-talk.

Then I wait for the nudge. It doesn’t have to be a bolt of lightning; it just has to be a quiet "yes." When I act from that place of presence rather than panic, things work the way they’re supposed to. I’ve learned that being okay with the next teeny, tiny step that’s completely right is better than pushing a mile in the wrong direction.

A Reminder on Your Wall

I hope you can feel this intention when you bring a piece of my work into your home.

My layered landscapes are built slowly, one intentional piece at a time. When you look at the way the shadows fall across the undulating layers, I hope it serves as a visual meditation for you.

Let it be a reminder to:

  • Find stillness first

  • Trust the nudge

  • Value the "tiny step" over the frantic sprint

In a world that demands we do everything at once, may these layers remind you that there is beauty—and immense power—in simply being.
